Ease of Training: 5
Suitable for: The eminently lovable ShihTzu is pretty much the perfect dog for anyone, whether a novice owner, a city-dweller or a family. This little floofball adores people and was bred to be your best friend. Although they are good with kids and other pets, like any small breed, Shih-Tzu’s must be watched closely with when playing with small children or large-breed dogs, less they accidentally get hurt. As they are small enough to be easily injured, they do better in a house with elementary-school aged kids.
They also should be well socialized during their puppyhood to a variety of people, places and other animals—luckily this is easy, as they are small enough to bring most places with you! They are cheerful little pups who will get along well with other family pets. As they are hypoallergenic, they do not shed, but will need to be groomed every six-eight weeks and brushed daily. If you are looking for a happy, hugely affectionate little housedog who will faithfully dog your footsteps from room to room, look no further than the precious ShihTzu.

Kid Friendly: 4 (great with school-aged kids and up)
Dog Friendly: 4
Tolerates being alone: 1
Ease of Training: 5
Suitable for: Cocker Spaniel’s make excellent family dogs as they are up for pretty much whatever you want to do—whether it’s snuggling beside you on the couch and watching Netflix, or romping in the backyard with the kids, the Spaniel’s main motivation is to please you. However, you must bear in mind that the Cocker is a sensitive little dog and small children pulling his ears or hurting him will be met with fear and possible behavioral issues. Because of this, the Cocker is recommended for families with elementary-school aged children.
As sweet and gentle as this pup is, remember that they were originally bred to be hunting dogs, and thus may chase small birds or animals, so keep your pup leashed at all times. Cocker Spaniel’s are impressionable little dogs and must be trained accordingly. Any kind of harsh training method will frighten your Cocker and traumatize them. Lots of praise and a gentle voice are the way to go with this breed. Part of the Cocker Spaniel’s appeal is their luxurious fur and long ears—keep in mind that these will need to be appropriately cared for. They should be brushed every day, groomed regularly and their ears must be kept dry. If the idea of an incredibly sweet, sensitive puppy who is beautiful both inside and out appeals to you, come meet our Cocker today!

PEMBROKE WELSH CORGI
Weight: 20-30 lbs
Energy level: 4
Exercise Needs: 4
Lifespan: 12-14
Does well in an apartment: 4
Shedding: 5
Intelligence: 5
Kid Friendly: 4
Dog Friendly: 3
Tolerates being alone: 2.5
Ease of Training: 5
Suitable for: Despite the internet depicting them as couch potatoes, this comical little dog is full of energy and always up for an adventure. Friendly and good with kids, the Corgi makes a nice family dog. However, due to his background as a herding breed, be aware that your Corgi may nip at the heels of small children and toddlers to “herd” them. It is nearly impossible to train this innate tendency out of them, so the Corgi is definitely more suited for a family with elementary-school aged kids. This is also a little dog that loves to talk, so be prepared for some barking.
The Corgi is an intelligent breed that is generally easy to train, although they can definitely have a stubborn streak. Just because they can understand what you want, doesn’t mean they will listen. Obedience classes are a great idea, as is the use of food as a reward for good behavior, since this breed is very food-motivated. Keep in mind that, due to their love of a good snack, the Corgi can easily become overweight, so make sure they get lots of exercise. The Corgi is a smart little dog who will also need plenty of mental stimulation, in the form of lots of toys, bones and socialization. This is the perfect dog for an active family that loves to take long walks/go hiking etc. and has experience with dogs. If you are looking for a confident, independent, cheerful little dog that can always make you laugh, the Corgi may be the perfect breed for you.

YORKSHIRE TERRIER (PARTI)
Weight: 5-11
Energy level: 5
Exercise Needs: 3
Lifespan: 12-15
Does well in an Apartment: 5
Shedding: hypoallergenic/non-shedding
Intelligence: 3.5
Kid Friendly: 3 (not recommended for families with toddlers/preschoolers)
Dog Friendly: 3
Tolerates being alone: 2
Ease of Training: 3.5
Suitable for: The Yorkie is the definition of a big dog in a little dog body—spunky and fearless, this pup is always up for a good time or a grand adventure. These little dogs do great in apartments, but are definitely yappy, so you will have to train them to know when and when not to bark. Because of their size and temperment, Yorkies are definitely recommended for families with older children who have been taught how to treat dogs—this is not a breed that will tolerate a lot of poking and prodding from small children. These pups are energetic and love to take walks and have play sessions, but are small enough that their exercise needs can be easily met with a ten to fifteen minute walk a day and some inside playtime. The Yorkie is the quintessential “Velcro” dog. However, because they are affectionate and tiny and adorable, people have a tendency to baby this breed and treat them as if are helpless. This is a bad idea, as it will cause your Yorkie to become fearful and neurotic. Keep in mind that these dogs were initially bred to hunt rats and are just as capable as a bigger dog. On the flip side of that, because of their fearlessness, it’s always a good idea to make sure that your Yorkie is leashed and supervised around other dogs, as they will have no problem starting trouble with a dog that is big enough to swallow them.
You also want to remember that they were bred as prey animals and should never be left unsupervised around things like hamsters or guinea pigs. They are also apt to take off in hot pursuit if they spot a squirrel so, again, keep them leashed. Despite their love of adventure, the Yorkie is, at heart, a super sweet, lovable dog who will adore his people above all else and will need plenty of lap-time and snuggles. So, if you are looking for a small, devoted, beautiful dog with a great big personality, stop by today and fall in love with our Yorkie!

FRENCH BULLDOG
Weight: 12-14

Exercise Needs: 3
Lifespan: 14-16 years
Does well in an Apartment: 3
Shedding: hypoallergenic
Intelligence: 4
Kid Friendly: 3
Dog Friendly: 3
Tolerates being alone: 2
Ease of Training: 3
Suitable for: Frenchies are adorable in their own perfect, unique way. Small and compact, these lively little dogs make wonderful companions and are never as happy as when they are being lavished with love. These pups enjoy playing all kinds of games and love “educational” doggie toys, but also adore a nice nap and generally maintain a very relaxed attitude. Training will be easiest if you incorporate short, upbeat training sessions that feel like a game. Frenchies like being around other pets but can grow up to be testy with adult dogs, so—like any breed—it is important to incorporate lots of early socialization with people, places and other animals. This pup is a small enough dog to go most places with you, so socializing them well is a lot of fun! The Frenchie needs to be kept in a cool, comfortable environment and not allowed to overheat. While normally two fifteen-minute walks a day are perfect for keeping him in shape, at the height of the summer, it’s best to keep walks a bit shorter than normaland either take them in early morning or later evening, when the sun is not at its hottest. The Frenchie is an inquisitive, mischievous little dog who will keep you laughing at his antics when he’s not happily snoring at your side. Perfect for families, novice owners and everyone else, this little bulldog is always an excellent choice!

Does well in an apartment: 3.5
Shedding: 4
Intelligence: 4.5
Kid Friendly: 3
Dog Friendly: 3
Tolerates being alone: 5
Ease of Training: 2
Suitable for: This plucky, independent breed is highly intelligent, loving and loyal. Despite being devoted to their owners and incredibly smart, they can be impatient with toddlers/preschoolers and, as such, are better suited to families with elementary school aged children. Although they are on the smaller side, Shibas are extremely active and need a lot of exercise. They were also bred to be hunting dogs and would do great with an outdoorsy type of owner who is into hunting/hiking/camping etc.Given their love of adventure, this is a dog that can never be allowed off leash, as they will take off to have fun and not realize they may be unable to find their way back to you. In fact, a microchip and a trackable collar are an excellent idea for your Shiba.
These pups have often been referred to as “cat-dogs” because of their freethinking nature and tendency to do things their own way. Another catlike tendency of the Shiba is that they are naturally clean and known to be one of the easiest dogs to housebreak! This little dog’s spirited intelligence and comical ways charms everyone who own one—it is said that a Shiba is not just a dog, it’s a way of life. Best suited for an experienced owner/family who has a fenced in yard, an active lifestyle and wants a dog that is happy to hang out--but also happy to do his own thing!

Does well in an Apartment: 2.5
Shedding: Hypoallergenic/non-shedding
Intelligence: 4
Kid Friendly: 3
Dog Friendly: 2
Tolerates being alone: 2
Ease of Training: 3.5
Suitable For: The Morkie is a small dog with tons of personality and sass. This lovable little scamp has a lot of energy and loves to play, but can be a bit on the stubborn side when it comes to training. Plenty of praise and rewards combined with short training sessions is the way to go with this breed. Morkies do well with other pets, as long as they are raised around them from puppyhood. Socialization to a variety of people, places and other animals is imperative with this breed.
Morkies are affectionate and highly loyal to their people. As they are a small breed who demands quite a bit of attention, they will do best with adults, or in a family that has older children. Although they will love everyone in their household, they will almost always claim one family member as “their” special person. The Morkie is also a great watchdog who will alert you to any suspicious activity, from falling branches to Amazon deliveries. Although you will not be able to fully train their barking tendencies out of them, if you are persistent and patient, you will be able to teach your Morkie to stop barking on command. Because Morkies can be a little on the stubborn side, they are best suited to an experienced dog owner. However, they can make a great dog for a novice owner who is willing to put in the time and effort to train them. We promise your efforts will be rewarded tenfold by this incredibly lovable and intensely devoted dog. If you are looking for to have a small, Velcro pup who loves playing and snuggling with equal fervor, stop by and meet our beautiful Morkie today!

Does well in an Apartment: 5
Shedding: 2
Intelligence: 4
Kid Friendly: 5
Dog Friendly: 2
Tolerates being alone: 1
Ease of Training: 3.5
Suitable for: Chihuahuas have gotten a reputation over the years for being “ankle-biters.” Nothing could be further from the truth—as long as you socialize your puppy. If your puppy is not properly socialized to a large variety of people, places and other animals, they will grow up to be fearful and likely aggressive towards strangers. However, when socialized (which is extremely easy, as they are small enough to go almost everywhere you go) these dogs are one of the most loving breeds in the world. All the tiny Chihuahua wants is to be by your side at all times. These pupsare serious snuggle-bugsand will burrow under the covers with you, or even under your shirt.
They also love children, but as they are small and fragile, it is easy for them to get injured. Once hurt, this breed will hold a grudge and, forever after, show dislike, fear, and sometimes aggression towards whoever harmed them. Because of this trait, they are only recommended for families with gentle children, who are at least of elementary-school age. If you are looking for a pocket-sized pal who is eager-to-please and will never want to leave your side, look no further because the Chihuahua is your perfect breed!

ROTTWEILER
Weight: 95-130 (Male) 85-115 (Female)
Energy level: 4
Exercise Needs: 4
Lifespan: 8-11
Does well in an Apartment: 1
Shedding: 4
Intelligence: 5
Kid Friendly:5
Dog Friendly: 2
Tolerates being alone: 1
Ease of Training: 4
Suitable for: This beautiful dog is a natural watchdog and a gentle protector of friends and family. As they are innate guardians, they can be quite ferocious in their desire to safeguard their people. Because of this, lots of early socialization to a variety of people, places and animals is vital to this breed. Firm, consistent training is also essential, along with plenty of exercise and a job to do. Because of these specific needs, Rotties are definitely recommended for an experienced dog owner with an active lifestyle who has plenty of time and energy to devote to their dog. If left with an inexperienced owner who employs violent, outdated, “alpha” training methods, the Rottweiler will become an aggressive bully with other people and animals. However, when properly socialized and trained by a calm, consistent leader, you would be hard-pressed to find a more playful, loving, gentle breed. They do, however, have a tendency to herd small children and may inadvertently bump them hard enough to knock them over. They may also get overly exuberant with small children running and playing around themand are more well-suited to a family with elementary aged school-children.
Obviously, no dog should ever be put in the backyard as a “guard dog” and forgotten about but, because of the Rottweiler’s intimidating appearance, people seem to think it is fine. It’s never fine. This is a highly intelligent breed who adores being around people and needs to be a vital member of your family. If you have experience training dogs and are looking for a dog who is intelligent, athletic, loves to work and has a great temperament, look no further than the amazing Rottweiler.

Suitable for: These precious little dogs are great for first time dog-owners, families, or seniors. So—pretty much everyone. Lovable, huggable and small enough to be portable, the Teddy Bear is eminently adaptable. Their cheerful personalities and gentle ways also make them an excellent choice as a therapy dog or emotional support dog. This baby will need regular brushing and trips to the groomer, but is adorable whether you keep his fur short or long. The Teddy Bear is a people dog through and through and cannot be left alone for long periods of time without becoming depressed and developing separation anxiety. The good news is, your Teddy is small enough to go almost everywhere with you!
Keep in mind that, despite their small size, these little pups have a good amount of energy. A twenty minute walk a day and some good play sessions, along with lots of toys and bones will keep your doggie happy and well-adjusted. Teddy Bears love children and other animals but, like any small dog, must be closely supervised around young children or large breed dogs, in order to prevent your puppy from being injured. Intelligence: 4
Kid Friendly: 3.5
Dog Friendly: 4

Ease of Training: 4
Suitable for: The Maltese is a beautiful little ball of silky fur who adores being the center of attention. Extremely people oriented, a Maltese will flourish when given lots of love and attention and makes an excellent therapy dog. Generally fearless, your Maltese will consider everyone they meet a friend. However, their small, delicate bone structure makes them a poor choice for families with toddlers or young children. Also, do not make the mistake of babying your Maltese too much, as he may then become snippy with anyone outside his beloved family. Just treat him like you would any other dog and make sure you socialize him to a variety of people, places and other animals during puppyhood so he grows up happy and well adjusted!
This breed’s luxuriant white fur can be allowed to grow all the way to the floor as long as you are committed to grooming him daily to keep him from matting. If not, this adorable pup is just as cute with shorter fur. It’s up to you to choose any look you like! If you keep his fur shorter, he will need to be groomed every six to eight weeks. This little dog is a housedog who does not tolerate extreme heat or cold and often does well being trained to a potty pad in order to stay inside in the wintertime. The Maltese will remain playful and puppylike throughout his life. His fiercely devoted nature and cheerful intelligence makes this breed the perfect dog for just about anyone. If that sounds great to you, come meet our little guy today!

Tolerates being alone: 1
Ease of Training: 5
Suitable for: The Mini Aussie is a small to mid-sized dog with a lot of energy who will need daily walks and a good amount of mental stimulation to grow into a happy, well-adjusted dog. Plan on an hour or two a day devoted to walks and play sessions with your puppy. This breed is highly intelligent and genuinely enjoys learning new things. They will do exceptionally well in obedience classes or in agility training. Like any puppy, the Mini-Aussie should be socialized to new people, places and things at a young age. They love children and other pets and will thrive when they are allowed to be important members of the family, who are left alone as infrequently as possible. As the Mini Aussie can be quite small during puppyhood, they are generally recommended for someone with elementary-school aged children. However, as long as your toddler/preschooler is well-supervised and gentle with the puppy, the Mini Aussie does eventually get large enough to be a bit sturdier, so it all works out. Cheerful, extremely devoted, eager to please and highly lovable, the Miniature Australian Shepherd is an excellent dog for an active owner or family.

ENGLISH BULLDOG

Does well in an Apartment: 5
Shedding: 3
Intelligence: 2.5
Kid Friendly: 4
Dog Friendly: 2 (unless raised together—does better with the opposite sex)
Tolerates being alone: 2.5
Ease of Training: 3
Suitable for: Who doesn’t love these smushy-faced couch potatoes? The English Bulldog wants nothing more than to hang out in bed with you, or on your couch (he’s not picky) preferably with a comfy blanket and some tasty snacks. Despite this, keep in mind that it is important to take your bulldog for a walk every day to keep his joints limber and to keep him from getting overweight. However, also be aware that these dogs have a tendency to easily overheat and are prone to heatstroke, so if it is too warm outside, walking your dog later in the evening or early in the morning is a good idea. The bulldog is also sensitive to cold weather, so should not be outdoors too long in the fall/winter months. All in all, even though his bulk makes him look big and tough, the bulldog is a homebody who should never be kept outside for long lengths of time.
Like all dogs, the Bulldog needs lots of early socialization, includingobedience classes and trips to the dog-park to ensure he grows up happy and well-adjusted. Their amiable, laid-back temperament makes the bulldog a great family dog that will get along great with children and other pets. If you are looking for a lovable, super-sweet, easy-going pal that will be admired wherever he goes, the Bulldog may be your breed!

BOSTON TERRIER
Weight: 10-25
Energy level: 4
Exercise Needs: 2.5
Lifespan: 13-15 years
Does well in an Apartment: 5
Shedding: 2
Intelligence: 4
Kid Friendly: 5
Dog Friendly: 5
Tolerates being alone: 2.5
Ease of Training: 3.5
Suitable for: Boston Terriers make great dogs for anyone, including families with young children, as they are small enough to easily interact with children, but sturdy enough to not get hurt. (Keep in mind that you should always keep a close eye on your puppy to ensure any children are being gentle) Due to their short snout, the Boston should never be allowed to get overheated. On the other hand, their short coat means they also do not do well in the cold. In a nutshell, the Boston is a housedog and should not be left outside for long periods of time.
These little dogs are playful and scrappy, so make sure to have plenty of toys and bones in your house. This breed does great with other dogs, but the males can sometimes get temperamental around other males, so make sure your Boston is exposed to a large variety of people, places and animals throughout their puppyhood to ensure they grow up cheerful and well-adjusted. While highly intelligent, this is not a breed that responds well to any negative/aggressive/”alpha” training methods. Keep the training sessions short and use lots of positive reinforcement, and your Boston will do great! If you can’t resist the large, soulful eyes of a Boston Terrier gazing up at you adoringly…stop trying. Come take your new Boston home today—we promise you won’t regret it.
