COCKER SPANIEL

Energy level: 4

Exercise Needs: 3

Lifespan: 12-15

Does well in an Apartment: 5

Shedding: 3

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 4 (elementary-school aged and up)

Dog Friendly: 4

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: Cocker Spaniel’s make excellent family dogs as they are up for pretty much whatever you want to do—whether it’s snuggling beside you on the couch and watching Netflix, or romping in the backyard with the kids, the Spaniel’s main motivation is to please you. However, you must bear in mind that the Cocker is a sensitive little dog and small children pulling his ears or hurting him will be met with fear and possible behavioral issues. Because of this, the Cocker is recommended for families with elementary-school aged children.

As sweet and gentle as this pup is, remember that they were originally bred to be hunting dogs, and thus may chase small birds or animals, so keep your pup leashed at all times. Cocker Spaniel’s are impressionable little dogs and must be trained accordingly. Any kind of harsh training method will frighten your Cocker and traumatize them. Lots of praise and a gentle voice are the way to go with this breed. Part of the Cocker Spaniel’s appeal is their luxurious fur and long ears—keep in mind that these will need to be appropriately cared for. They should be brushed every day, groomed regularly and their ears must be kept dry. If the idea of an incredibly sweet, sensitive puppy who is beautiful both inside and out appeals to you, come meet our Cocker today!

POMSKY

Weight: 15-30

Energy level: 4

Exercise Needs: 4

Lifespan: 13-15

Does well in an apartment: 3 (this is a vocal dog)

Shedding: 4

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 3 (does best with elementary-school aged kids)

Dog Friendly: 3

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 3

Suitable for: A family with elementary-school aged children and experience with dogs. The Pomsky is a comical little dog who loves to be with his family—they will be loving and devoted to the entire family, but will generally pick one person as “their” person. However, they hate being alone and will thrive in an environment where they can be part of all family activities. Although this is a highly energetic breed, as they are small they can get their energy out with a half hour walk every day and a few play sessions. Make sure to provide them with plenty of toys and different activities, as they are smart enough to need a good amount of mental stimulation. As with any breed, the Pomsky needs to be socialized during puppyhood to a variety of people, places and other animals, in order to grow into a well-adjusted dog.

Like the Husky, Pomsky’s are known for being quite vocal—so, while they are definitely small enough for apartment living, they will need to be trained on when to be quiet—although you will never train their chattiness out of them, as it is an intrinsic part of the breed. Pomsky’s are highly intelligent and eager to please you, but do have a bit of a stubborn streak and a tendency to want to do things their own way, which is why they are recommended for experienced dog owners. Like all dogs, they don’t respond well to outdated “alpha” training methods. They will do well with short training sessions, (be sure to walk them or play with them first so they can get their energy out and focus) with lots of praise and plenty of positive reinforcement.  If you are looking for an active dog who will make you laugh and be your faithful sidekick, the Pomsky is the one for you!

COCKAPOO

Weight: 12-24 lbs

Energy level: 3

Exercise Needs: 2.5

Lifespan: 12-15

Does well in an apartment: 4

Shedding: 1

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 4

Dog Friendly: 5

Tolerates being alone: 2

Ease of Training: 4

Suitable for: This adorable fluffball is a cheerful comedian who will keep you laughing and make the perfect buddy for you to hang out with. Sociable and playful, the Cockapoo loves everyone, including kids and other pets. That being said, they are rambunctious and can sometimes overwhelm small children. Because of that, they are recommended for kids ages five and up. However, this is just a general recommendation—you know your child best. Please keep in mind, on the flip side of that, that this breed is small enough that your child must be gentle and calm with your Cockapoo, to prevent your pup from becoming injured.

This little dog will barely shed (if at all) and will be easy to maintain as long as he is regularly brushed. Although they have a good amount of energy, the Cockapoo is small enough that one fifteen minute walk a day, some play sessions and a variety of toys will be enough to keep him happy. This breed is great for first-time dog owners, as their intelligence and desire to please make them easy to train. If you are looking for an adorable puppy that will look like a stuffed animal his whole life, and love you with his whole heart, the Cockapoo is perfect for you!

“Quasimodo”/Male Talent: Quasimodo own many fine, leather-bound books and considers himself to be quite the intellectual. ;)

PUG

Weight: 14-18

Energy level: 3

Exercise Needs: 3

Lifespan: 12-15

Does well in an apartment: 5

Shedding: 5

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 4

Dog Friendly: 4

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 3

Suitable for: There is no way to look at the comical face of a little Pug and not smile. These compact, wrinkly little smushballs expect to be the center of your world and will be visibly heartbroken if you don’t give them all the love and attention they desire.  Although these pups are quite intelligent, they do have a stubborn streak that can make them a bit challenging to train. Crate training, lots of potty trips and a ton of positive reinforcement is the way to go with this breed. Keep in mind that Pugs may be willful, but they make up for that with an abundance of cheer and a lot of personality.

These are easygoing little dogs who are good for novice owners and families alike. As always, if you have small children, they should be taught how to act respectfully around dogs, and never be around the puppy without supervision. Like any pup, the Pug should be well socialized to a variety of people, places and other animals. Also, keep in mind that, because they have flatter faces, Pugs do not do well in extremely hot or cold. These are strictly indoor pups who will need about a brisk 20 minute walk per day to stay happy and healthy. If you are ready for a comical little charmer who is happy-go-lucky, generally quiet and makes a great snuggle partner, look no further than the inimitable Pug!

SHIH TZU

Lifespan: 12-16

Does well in an Apartment: 5

Shedding: little to no shedding

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 4

Dog Friendly: 4

Tolerates being alone: 2

Ease of Training: 3.5

Suitable for: The eminently lovable ShihTzu is pretty much the perfect dog for anyone, whether a novice owner, a city-dweller or a family. This little floofball adores people and was bred to be your best friend. Although they are good with kids and other pets, like any small breed, Shih-Tzu’s must be watched closely with when playing with small children or large-breed dogs, less they accidentally get hurt. As they are small enough to be easily injured, they do better in a house with elementary-school aged kids.

They also should be well socialized during their puppyhood to a variety of people, places and other animals—luckily this is easy, as they are small enough to bring most places with you! They are cheerful little pups who will get along well with other family pets. As they are hypoallergenic, they do not shed, but will need to be groomed every six-eight weeks and brushed daily. If you are looking for a happy, hugely affectionate little housedog who will faithfully dog your footsteps from room to room, look no further than the precious ShihTzu.

YORKSHIRE TERRIER

Weight:  5-11

Energy level: 5

Exercise Needs: 3

Lifespan: 12-15

Does well in an Apartment: 5

Shedding: hypoallergenic/non-very light-shedding

Intelligence: 3.5

Kid Friendly: 3 (but not recommended for families with toddlers/preschoolers)

Dog Friendly: 3

Tolerates being alone: 2

Ease of Training: 3.5

Suitable for:  The Yorkie is the definition of a big dog in a little dog body—spunky and fearless, this pup is always up for a good time or a grand adventure. These little dogs do great in apartments, but are definitely yappy, so you will have to train them to know when and when not to bark. Because of their size and temperment, Yorkies are definitely recommended for families with older children who have been taught how to treat dogs—this is not a breed that will tolerate a lot of poking and prodding from small children. These pups are energetic and love to take walks and have play sessions, but are small enough that their exercise needs can be easily met with a ten to fifteen minute walk a day and some inside playtime. The Yorkie is the quintessential “Velcro” dog. However, because they are affectionate and tiny and adorable, people have a tendency to baby this breed and treat them as if are helpless. This is a bad idea, as it will cause your Yorkie to become fearful and neurotic. Keep in mind that these dogs were initially bred to hunt rats and are just as capable as a bigger dog.  On the flip side of that, because of their fearlessness, it’s always a good idea to make sure that your Yorkie is leashed and supervised around other dogs, as they will have no problem starting trouble with a dog that is big enough to swallow them.

You also want to remember that they were bred as prey animals and should never be left unsupervised around things like hamsters or guinea pigs. They are also apt to take off in hot pursuit if they spot a squirrel so, again, keep them leashed. Despite their love of adventure, the Yorkie is, at heart, a super sweet, lovable dog who will adore his people above all else and will need plenty of lap-time and snuggles. So, if you are looking for a small, devoted, beautiful dog with a great big personality, stop by today and fall in love with our Yorkie!

FRENCH BULLDOG

Weight:  12-14

Exercise Needs:  3

Lifespan:  14-16 years

Does well in an Apartment:  3

Shedding:  hypoallergenic

Intelligence:  4

Kid Friendly:  3

Dog Friendly:  3

Tolerates being alone:  2

Ease of Training: 3

Suitable for: Frenchies are adorable in their own perfect, unique way. Small and compact, these lively little dogs make wonderful companions and are never as happy as when they are being lavished with love. These pups enjoy playing all kinds of games and love “educational” doggie toys, but also adore a nice nap and generally maintain a very relaxed attitude. Training will be easiest if you incorporate short, upbeat training sessions that feel like a game. Frenchies like being around other pets but can grow up to be testy with adult dogs, so—like any breed—it is important to incorporate lots of early socialization with people, places and other animals. This pup is a small enough dog to go most places with you, so socializing them well is a lot of fun! The Frenchie needs to be kept in a cool, comfortable environment and not allowed to overheat. While normally two fifteen-minute walks a day are perfect for keeping him in shape, at the height of the summer, it’s best to keep walks a bit shorter than normaland either take them in early morning or later evening, when the sun is not at its hottest. The Frenchie is an inquisitive, mischievous little dog who will keep you laughing at his antics when he’s not happily snoring at your side. Perfect for families, novice owners and everyone else, this little bulldog is always an excellent choice!

Lifespan: 12-15

Does well in an Apartment: 4

Shedding: 3

Intelligence: 5

Kid Friendly: 5

Dog Friendly: 5

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for:  The Mini Aussie is a small to mid-sized dog with a lot of energy who will need daily walks and a good amount of mental stimulation to grow into a happy, well-adjusted dog. Plan on an hour or two a day devoted to walks and play sessions with your puppy.  This breed is highly intelligent and genuinely enjoys learning new things. They will do exceptionally well in obedience classes or in agility training.  Like any puppy, the Mini-Aussie should be socialized to new people, places and things at a young age. They love children and other pets and will thrive when they are allowed to be important members of the family, who are left alone as infrequently as possible. As the Mini Aussie can be quite small during puppyhood, they are generally recommended for someone with elementary-school aged children. However, as long as your toddler/preschooler is well-supervised and gentle with the puppy, the Mini Aussie does eventually get large enough to be a bit sturdier, so it all works out. Cheerful, extremely devoted, eager to please and highly lovable, the Miniature Australian Shepherd is an excellent dog for an active owner or family.

Ease of Training: 2

Suitable for: This plucky, independent breed is highly intelligent, loving and loyal. Despite being devoted to their owners and incredibly smart, they can be impatient with toddlers/preschoolers and, as such, are better suited to families with elementary school aged children. Although they are on the smaller side, Shibas are extremely active and need a lot of exercise. They were also bred to be hunting dogs and would do great with an outdoorsy type of owner who is into hunting/hiking/camping etc.Given their love of adventure, this is a dog that can never be allowed off leash, as they will take off to have fun and not realize they may be unable to find their way back to you. In fact, a microchip and a trackable collar are an excellent idea for your Shiba. These pups have often been referred to as “cat-dogs” because of their freethinking nature and tendency to do things their own way. Another catlike tendency of the Shiba is that they are naturally clean and known to be one of the easiest dogs to housebreak! This little dog’s spirited intelligence and comical ways charms everyone who own one—it is said that a Shiba is not just a dog, it’s a way of life. Best suited for an experienced owner/family who has a fenced in yard, an active lifestyle and wants a dog that is happy to hang out--but also happy to do his own thing!

Lovable, huggable and small enough to be portable, the Teddy Bear is eminently adaptable. Their cheerful personalities and gentle ways also make them an excellent choice as a therapy dog or emotional support dog. This baby will need regular brushing and trips to the groomer, but is adorable whether you keep his fur short or long. The Teddy Bear is a people dog through and through and cannot be left alone for long periods of time without becoming depressed and developing separation anxiety. The good news is, your Teddy is small enough to go almost everywhere with you! Keep in mind that, despite their small size, these little pups have a good amount of energy. A twenty minute walk a day and some good play sessions, along with lots of toys and bones will keep your doggie happy and well-adjusted. Teddy Bears love children and other animals but, like any small dog, must be closely supervised around young children or large breed dogs, in order to prevent your puppy from being injured. MINI DACHSHUND

Weight:  8-11

Lifespan: 12-15

Does well in an Apartment: 5

Shedding: 3

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 4

Dog Friendly: 3

Tolerates being alone: 2.5

Ease of Training: 3

Suitable for: The breed standard for the Dachshund states that this breed is “clever, lively and courageous to the point of rashness.” That is an excellent description. Despite their small size and adorable appearance, Dachshunds were originally bred as hunting dogs and their size/build enabled them to dig and maneuver through tunnels, hunting badgers. Over the years, Dachshunds have ended up primarily being family dogs, but they have not lost their instinct to dig and chase, nor have they lost the idea that they are the ones in charge. It’s this combination of playfulness, intelligence and comical stubbornness that endears the breed to people of all ages and lifestyles.  Dachshunds make good family dogs as they are extremely lovable, but keep in mind that they are likely to bond the most strongly with one person. They also absolutely must be socialized throughout their puppyhood, or you risk your darling pup growing up to be aggressive with anyone outside of their household. This tendency towards aggression can be greatly mitigated by socializing your puppy to a variety of people, places and other animals throughout their lives. (Do remember to keep an eye on them with anything like kittens or small rodents though as, again, this was originally a hunting breed)  Doxie’s love their snacks and are prone to being overweight, so you must be able to resist the appeal in those soulful eyes, as they do their best to convince you they’ve never been fed before. If you are looking for an adorable, intelligent pup with an independent streak and a playful spirit, the Dachshund might be the one for you!

MINI SCHNAUZER

Weight: 11-20

Energy level: 5

Exercise Needs: 5

Lifespan: 12-14

Does well in an Apartment: 3

Shedding: hypoallergenic and no to low shedding

Intelligence: 4.5

Kid Friendly: 3 (does great with older kids, but not little ones)

Dog Friendly: 3

Tolerates being alone: 3

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: The Mini Schnauzer is all big, huge personality and loving heart stuffed into a little dog. Affectionate, cheerful, playful and loving, this pup wants nothing more than to have fun with their favorite people. They’re good with kids and other dogs, although they should be supervised around large breeds as they have a lot of swagger that can get them into trouble.  However, they should also always be watched carefully around smaller mammals, as their ratter instincts may be triggered.  The Mini-Schnauzer is easily trained, but can be stubborn if they don’t know you are the boss. Because of this, obedience classes are an excellent idea. They are also 100% watchdog and will bark to protect you from any danger they perceive, whether it comes in the form of an Amazon delivery or a falling branch. You are welcome.

Your Mini Schnauzer will need a good amount of playtime and walks, along with plenty of socialization to new people, places and things. They are very intelligent and will become bored if their days are repetitive, so new toys and tricks to learn are always going to be a great idea. They will do great with an active family that has school-aged children or anyone who has an active lifestyle. If you are looking for a dog who is supremely affectionate, incredibly clever and laughably mischievous, look no further than the always-amazing Mini Schnauzer.

BOSTON TERRIER

Weight: 10-25

Lifespan: 13-15

Does well in an apartment: 5

Shedding: 2

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 5

Dog Friendly: 5

Tolerates being alone: 2.5

Ease of Training: 3.5

Suitable for: Boston Terriers make great dogs for anyone, including families with young children, as they are small enough to easily interact with children, but sturdy enough to not get hurt. (Keep in mind that you should always keep a close eye on your puppy to ensure any children are being gentle) Due to their short snout, the Boston should never be allowed to get overheated. On the other hand, their short coat means they also do not do well in the cold. In a nutshell, the Boston is a housedog and should not be left outside for long periods of time.

These little dogs are playful and scrappy, so make sure to have plenty of toys and bones in your house. This breed does great with other dogs, but the males can sometimes get temperamental around other males, so make sure your Boston is exposed to a large variety of people, places and animals throughout their puppyhood to ensure they grow up cheerful and well-adjusted. While highly intelligent, this is not a breed that responds well to any negative/aggressive/”alpha” training methods. Keep the training sessions short and use lots of positive reinforcement, and your Boston will do great! If you can’t resist the large, soulful eyes of a Boston Terrier gazing up at you adoringly…stop trying. Come take your new Boston home today—we promise you won’t regret it.

PEMBROKE WELSH
CORGI

Weight:  20-30

Energy level: 4

Exercise Needs: 4

Lifespan: 12-14

Does well in an Apartment: 4

Shedding: 5

Intelligence: 5

Kid Friendly: 4

Dog Friendly: 3

Tolerates being alone: 2.5

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: Despite the internet depicting them as couch potatoes, this comical little dog is full of energy and always up for an adventure. Friendly and good with kids, the Corgi makes a nice family dog. However, due to his background as a herding breed, be aware that your Corgi may nip at the heels of small children and toddlers to “herd” them. It is nearly impossible to train this innate tendency out of them, so the Corgi is definitely more suited for a family with elementary-school aged kids. This is also a little dog that loves to talk, so be prepared for some barking.

The Corgi is an intelligent breed that is generally easy to train, although they can definitely have a stubborn streak. Just because they can understand what you want, doesn’t mean they will listen. Obedience classes are a great idea, as is the use of food as a reward for good behavior, since this breed is very food-motivated. Keep in mind that, due to their love of a good snack, the Corgi can easily become overweight, so make sure they get lots of exercise. The Corgi is a smart little dog who will also need plenty of mental stimulation, in the form of lots of toys, bones and socialization. This is the perfect dog for an active family that loves to take long walks/go hiking etc. and has experience with dogs. If you are looking for a confident, independent, cheerful little dog that can always make you laugh, the Corgi may be the perfect breed for you.

The Pom is easy to train, as long as they know that you are in charge—if not, they will be glad to step up and declare themselves ruler of all they see. It’s always a good idea to take your pup to obedience training--you will be surprised to see how much they enjoy learning new tricks. Your Pom will also make an excellent watch dog, once they’ve been trained to stop barking on command.  These little dogs are truly lovable and are happiest when surrounded by all their people. They will normally pick one family member as “theirs” but they will play with everyone. If you are looking for a pocket-sized dog who is smart, independent and fiercely devoted to you, the Pom is the perfect pupper!
