Does well in an Apartment: 2.5

Shedding: Hypoallergenic/non-shedding

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 3

Dog Friendly: 2

Tolerates being alone: 2

Ease of Training: 3.5

Suitable for: The Milky is a small dog with tons of personality and sass. This lovable little scamp has a lot of energy and loves to play, but can be a bit on the stubborn side when it comes to training. Plenty of praise and rewards combined with short training sessions is the way to go with this breed. Milkies do well with other pets, as long as they are raised around them from puppyhood. Socialization to a variety of people, places and other animals is important with this breed.

The Milky is affectionate and highly loyal to their people. As they are a small breed who demands quite a bit of attention, they will do best with adults, or in a family that has older children. Although they will love everyone in their household, they will almost always claim one family member as “their” special person. The Milky is also a great watchdog who will alert you to any suspicious activity, from falling branches to Amazon deliveries. Although you will not be able to fully train their barking tendencies out of them, if you are persistent and patient, you will be able to teach your Milky to stop barking on command. Because Milky’s can be a little on the stubborn side, they are best suited to an experienced dog owner. However, they can make a great dog for a novice owner who is willing to put in the time and effort to train them. We promise your efforts will be rewarded tenfold by this incredibly lovable and intensely devoted dog. If you are looking for to have a small, Velcro pup who loves playing and snuggling with equal fervor, stop by and meet our beautiful little Milky today!

Dog Friendly: 4

Tolerates being alone: 2

Ease of Training: 3.5

Suitable for: The eminently lovable ShihTzu is pretty much the perfect dog for anyone, whether a novice owner, a city-dweller or a family. This little floofball adores people and was bred to be your best friend. Although they are good with kids and other pets, like any small breed, Shih-Tzu’s must be watched closely with when playing with small children or large-breed dogs, less they accidentally get hurt. As they are small enough to be easily injured, they do better in a house with elementary-school aged kids.

They also should be well socialized during their puppyhood to a variety of people, places and other animals—luckily this is easy, as they are small enough to bring most places with you! They are cheerful little pups who will get along well with other family pets. As they are hypoallergenic, they do not shed, but will need to be groomed every six-eight weeks and brushed daily. If you are looking for a happy, hugely affectionate little housedog who will faithfully dog your footsteps from room to room, look no further than the precious ShihTzu.

BOSTON TERRIER

Weight:  10-25

Energy level: 4

Exercise Needs: 2.5

Lifespan: 13-15 years

Does well in an Apartment: 5

Shedding: 2

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 5

Dog Friendly: 5

Tolerates being alone: 2.5

Ease of Training: 3.5

Suitable for: Boston Terriers make great dogs for anyone, including families with young children, as they are small enough to easily interact with children, but sturdy enough to not get hurt. (Keep in mind that you should always keep a close eye on your puppy to ensure any children are being gentle) Due to their short snout, the Boston should never be allowed to get overheated. On the other hand, their short coat means they also do not do well in the cold. In a nutshell, the Boston is a housedog and should not be left outside for long periods of time.

These little dogs are playful and scrappy, so make sure to have plenty of toys and bones in your house. This breed does great with other dogs, but the males can sometimes get temperamental around other males, so make sure your Boston is exposed to a large variety of people, places and animals throughout their puppyhood to ensure they grow up cheerful and well-adjusted. While highly intelligent, this is not a breed that responds well to any negative/aggressive/”alpha” training methods. Keep the training sessions short and use lots of positive reinforcement, and your Boston will do great! If you can’t resist the large, soulful eyes of a Boston Terrier gazing up at you adoringly…stop trying. Come take your new Boston home today—we promise you won’t regret it.

Shedding: Hypoallergenic/non-shedding

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 3.5

Dog Friendly: 4

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 4

Suitable for: The Maltese is a beautiful little ball of silky fur who adores being the center of attention. Extremely people oriented, a Maltese will flourish when given lots of love and attention and makes an excellent therapy dog. Generally fearless, your Maltese will consider everyone they meet a friend. However, their small, delicate bone structure makes them a poor choice for families with toddlers or young children. Also, do not make the mistake of babying your Maltese too much, as he may then become snippy with anyone outside his beloved family. Just treat him like you would any other dog and make sure you socialize him to a variety of people, places and other animals during puppyhood so he grows up happy and well adjusted!

This breed’s luxuriant white fur can be allowed to grow all the way to the floor as long as you are committed to grooming him daily to keep him from matting. If not, this adorable pup is just as cute with shorter fur. It’s up to you to choose any look you like! If you keep his fur shorter, he will need to be groomed every six to eight weeks.  This little dog is a housedog who does not tolerate extreme heat or cold and often does well being trained to a potty pad in order to stay inside in the wintertime. The Maltese will remain playful and puppylike throughout his life. His fiercely devoted nature and cheerful intelligence makes this breed the perfect dog for just about anyone. If that sounds great to you, come meet our little guy today!

They also must get lots of exercise, at the very least two thirty minute walks a day, along with a plenty of play sessions. If not sufficiently exercised, they will act out in a variety of destructive ways. These are excellent dogs that will keep you laughing at their vocalizing and comical antics, but they must go home with an owner/family who is willing to put in the time to with socializing, exercising and training to ensure their puppy grows into a happy, well-adjusted dog.

Energy level: 4

Exercise Needs: 3

Lifespan: 12-15

Does well in an Apartment: 5

Shedding: 3

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 4 (great with school-aged kids and up)

Dog Friendly: 4

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: Cocker Spaniel’s make excellent family dogs as they are up for pretty much whatever you want to do—whether it’s snuggling beside you on the couch and watching Netflix, or romping in the backyard with the kids, the Spaniel’s main motivation is to please you. However, you must bear in mind that the Cocker is a sensitive little dog and small children pulling his ears or hurting him will be met with fear and possible behavioral issues. Because of this, the Cocker is recommended for families with elementary-school aged children.

As sweet and gentle as this pup is, remember that they were originally bred to be hunting dogs, and thus may chase small birds or animals, so keep your pup leashed at all times. Cocker Spaniel’s are impressionable little dogs and must be trained accordingly. Any kind of harsh training method will frighten your Cocker and traumatize them. Lots of praise and a gentle voice are the way to go with this breed. Part of the Cocker Spaniel’s appeal is their luxurious fur and long ears—keep in mind that these will need to be appropriately cared for. They should be brushed every day, groomed regularly and their ears must be kept dry. If the idea of an incredibly sweet, sensitive puppy who is beautiful both inside and out appeals to you, come meet our Cocker today!

PEMBROKE WELSH CORGI

Weight:  20-30 lbs

Energy level: 4

Exercise Needs: 4

Lifespan: 12-14

Does well in an apartment:  4

Shedding: 5

Intelligence: 5

Kid Friendly: 4

Dog Friendly: 3

Tolerates being alone: 2.5

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: Despite the internet depicting them as couch potatoes, this comical little dog is full of energy and always up for an adventure. Friendly and good with kids, the Corgi makes a nice family dog. However, due to his background as a herding breed, be aware that your Corgi may nip at the heels of small children and toddlers to “herd” them. It is nearly impossible to train this innate tendency out of them, so the Corgi is definitely more suited for a family with elementary-school aged kids. This is also a little dog that loves to talk, so be prepared for some barking.

The Corgi is an intelligent breed that is generally easy to train, although they can definitely have a stubborn streak. Just because they can understand what you want, doesn’t mean they will listen. Obedience classes are a great idea, as is the use of food as a reward for good behavior, since this breed is very food-motivated. Keep in mind that, due to their love of a good snack, the Corgi can easily become overweight, so make sure they get lots of exercise. The Corgi is a smart little dog who will also need plenty of mental stimulation, in the form of lots of toys, bones and socialization. This is the perfect dog for an active family that loves to take long walks/go hiking etc. and has experience with dogs. If you are looking for a confident, independent, cheerful little dog that can always make you laugh, the Corgi may be the perfect breed for you.

BEAGLE

Lifespan: 12-15

Does well in an Apartment: 3

Shedding: 3

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 5

Dog Friendly: 4

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 2.5

Suitable for: The Beagle is a cheery, affectionate little dog who is active, curious and needs an experienced owner. They are adaptable to both country and city living (as long as they get lots of walks and visits to the park) love their families and are always happy to make new friends. However, Beagles hate being left alone and can become destructive and overweight when lonely. This is a breed that must be allowed to be an active, important part of the family.

The biggest thing to know about Beagles is they are scent-hounds, meaning their nose will always be one of their main motivators. Their tendency to track whatever scent has caught their notice means when they are outside, they must always be either kept on their leash or in a fenced in environment. Because their nose is constantly distracting them and they have a wide independent streak, Beagles can be quite a challenge to train. Crate training is recommended. Also, when it is time to work with your Beagle, you will have a much easier time if they are allowed to run and sniff for at least a half hour before being expected to settle down and listen to your instructions. :) J Keep in mind that Beagles are extremely food-motivated, so treats are a fantastic training tool, along with a lot of positive reinforcement. While these little dogs require an experienced, patient dog owner, the reward of owning a Beagle is truly great. Beagles are extremely loving, happy-go-lucky little dogs who are amazing with kids, unfailingly devoted to their families and will keep you constantly entertained with their comical ways.

Plan on an hour or two a day devoted to walks and play sessions with your puppy.  This breed is highly intelligent and genuinely enjoys learning new things. They will do exceptionally well in obedience classes or in agility training.  Like any puppy, the Mini-Aussie should be socialized to new people, places and things at a young age. They love children and other pets and will thrive when they are allowed to be important members of the family, who are left alone as infrequently as possible. As the Mini Aussie can be quite small during puppyhood, they are generally recommended for someone with elementary-school aged children. However, as long as your toddler/preschooler is well-supervised and gentle with the puppy, the Mini Aussie does eventually get large enough to be a bit sturdier, so it all works out. Cheerful, extremely devoted, eager to please and highly lovable, the Miniature Australian Shepherd is an excellent dog for an active owner or family.

Does well in an Apartment: 5

Intelligence: 3.5

Kid Friendly: 4

Dog Friendly: 4

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 4

Suitable for: Frenchies are adorable in their own perfect, unique way. Small and compact, these lively little dogs make wonderful companions and are never as happy as when they are being lavished with love. These pups enjoy playing all kinds of games and love “educational” doggie toys, but also adore a nice nap and generally maintain a very relaxed attitude. Training will be easiest if you incorporate short, upbeat training sessions that feel like a game. Frenchies like being around other pets but can grow up to be testy with adult dogs, so—like any breed—it is important to incorporate lots of early socialization with people, places and other animals. This pup is a small enough dog to go most places with you, so socializing them well is a lot of fun!

The Frenchie needs to be kept in a cool, comfortable environment and not allowed to overheat. While normally two fifteen-minute walks a day are perfect for keeping him in shape, at the height of the summer, it’s best to keep walks a bit shorter than normaland either take them in early morning or later evening, when the sun is not at its hottest. The Frenchie is an inquisitive, mischievous little dog who will keep you laughing at his antics when he’s not happily snoring at your side. Perfect for families, novice owners and everyone else, this little bulldog is always an excellent choice!

Intelligence: 4.5

Kid Friendly: 3 (does great with older kids, but not little ones)

Dog Friendly: 3

Tolerates being alone: 3

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: The Mini Schnauzer is all big, huge personality and loving heart stuffed into a little dog. Affectionate, cheerful, playful and loving, this pup wants nothing more than to have fun with their favorite people. They’re good with kids and other dogs, although they should be supervised around large breeds as they have a lot of swagger that can get them into trouble.  However, they should also always be watched carefully around smaller mammals, as their ratter instincts may be triggered.  The Mini-Schnauzer is easily trained, but can be stubborn if they don’t know you are the boss. Because of this, obedience classes are an excellent idea. They are also 100% watchdog and will bark to protect you from any danger they perceive, whether it comes in the form of an Amazon delivery or a falling branch. You are welcome.

Your Mini Schnauzer will need a good amount of playtime and walks, along with plenty of socialization to new people, places and things. They are very intelligent and will become bored if their days are repetitive, so new toys and tricks to learn are always going to be a great idea. They will do great with an active family that has school-aged children or anyone who has an active lifestyle. If you are looking for a dog who is supremely affectionate, incredibly clever and laughably mischievous, look no further than the always-amazing Mini Schnauzer.

MINI DACHSHUND

Weight:  8-11

Lifespan: 12-15 years

Does well in an Apartment: 5

Shedding: 3

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 4

Dog Friendly: 3

Tolerates being alone: 3

Ease of Training: 2.5

Suitable for: The breed standard for the Dachshund states that this breed is “clever, lively and courageous to the point of rashness.” That is an excellent description. Despite their small size and adorable appearance, Dachshunds were originally bred as hunting dogs and their size/build enabled them to dig and maneuver through tunnels, hunting badgers. Over the years, Dachshunds have ended up primarily being family dogs, but they have not lost their instinct to dig and chase, nor have they lost the idea that they are the ones in charge. It’s this combination of playfulness, intelligence and comical stubbornness that endears the breed to people of all ages and lifestyles.  Dachshunds make good family dogs as they are extremely lovable, but keep in mind that they are likely to bond the most strongly with one person. They love their snacks and are prone to being overweight, so you must be able to resist the appeal in those soulful eyes, as they do their best to convince you they’ve never been fed before. If you are looking for an adorable, intelligent pup with an independent streak and a playful spirit, the Dachshund might be the one for you!
