Lifespan: 12-15

Does well in an Apartment: 5

Shedding: little to no shedding

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 4

Dog Friendly: 4

Tolerates being alone: 2

Ease of Training: 3

Suitable for: The Peek-A-Poo is an affectionate, happy little dog who wants nothing more than to be a valued member of your family. They do great with school-aged children (generally six and up depending on the child) as long as the children have been taught how to be gentle and respectful of dogs and as long as they are raised together. The Peek-A-Poo is, by nature, wary of strangers—both people and animals alike. Because of this, it is imperative that they are well socialized to a variety of people, places and other animals throughout their puppyhood. These are active little dogs who love to play outdoors. They have a good amount of energy and will need at least one good walk and a couple nice play sessions every day. Just be careful they don’t run around too much, as they can overheat easily. During the summer, an air-conditioned house is a must for this breed. The Peek-A-Poo is a natural born watchdog and will alert you to anything they find suspicious, so if you are looking for a quiet breed, perhaps the Peek-A-Poo isn’t your ideal match. However, if you are interested in an adorable, smart, cheerful little pup who will, no doubt, become the beating heart of your family, look no further than the wonderful Peek-A-Poo

If you’re searching for a pint size companion that combines elegance and spunk, meet the beautiful Silkese! With their silky coats, affectionate nature and lively spirits, Silkies are perfect for city apartments, cozy homes or anyone craving a loyal lapdog with just a touch of mischief. Silkies thrive of cuddles and love being the center of attention. They also love to play and are curious by nature, so will happily chase toys or go with you to explore new sights and have grand adventures. SIlkies are good little watchdogs, who are quick to alert you to any visitors. They are not as “yappy” as some other breeds, but do also enjoy using their voice, so keep this in mind if you live in an apartment. These little pups form deep bonds with their families and will do well with seniors, singles or families with gentle children. Given their small size, they are generally recommended for children six and up. Silkese pups are definitely intelligent but may inherit a touch of the Silky Terrier’s stubbornness. Short training sessions with lots of positive reinforcement will work best with these pups. Silkese pups are ideal for someone who is looking for a small dog with a big personality—preferably someone who works from home or has a very flexible schedule, as this small pup hates being left alone. So, if you are looking for a devoted, adaptable, pocket puppy with a heart full of love, the Silkese might be your perfect match.

MINI SCHNAUZER

Weight: 11-20

Energy level: 5

Exercise Needs: 5

Lifespan: 12-14

Does well in an Apartment: 3

Shedding: hypoallergenic and no to low shedding

Intelligence: 4.5

Kid Friendly: 3 (does great with older kids, but not little ones)

Dog Friendly: 3

Tolerates being alone: 3

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: The Mini Schnauzer is all big, huge personality and loving heart stuffed into a little dog. Affectionate, cheerful, playful and loving, this pup wants nothing more than to have fun with their favorite people. They’re good with kids and other dogs, although they should be supervised around large breeds as they have a lot of swagger that can get them into trouble.  However, they should also always be watched carefully around smaller mammals, as their ratter instincts may be triggered.  The Mini-Schnauzer is easily trained, but can be stubborn if they don’t know you are the boss. Because of this, obedience classes are an excellent idea. They are also 100% watchdog and will bark to protect you from any danger they perceive, whether it comes in the form of an Amazon delivery or a falling branch. You are welcome.

Your Mini Schnauzer will need a good amount of playtime and walks, along with plenty of socialization to new people, places and things. They are very intelligent and will become bored if their days are repetitive, so new toys and tricks to learn are always going to be a great idea. They will do great with an active family that has school-aged children or anyone who has an active lifestyle. If you are looking for a dog who is supremely affectionate, incredibly clever and laughably mischievous, look no further than the always-amazing Mini Schnauzer.

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: The Miniature American Eskimo, or “Eskie” is a compact bundle of intelligence and charm. Bred from German Spitz lineage and later popularized in American circuses for their agility and trainability, Miniature Eskies are quick learners who thrive on mental challenges and positive reinforcement . Their lively, affectionate nature makes them devoted companions, though their sensitivity to household tension and tendency to bark at strangers underscore their watchdog heritage. Daily exercise—like brisk walks or play sessions—is essential to channel their energy and prevent mischief. Ideal for active families or individuals, Eskies bond deeply with their humans but are wary of rough handling, so it is important if you have a toddler/preschooler that they have been taught to be gentle and respectful with their new puppy. As with any puppy, socializing your Eskie to a variety of people, places and other animals will ensure that that your puppy grows into a happy, well-adjusted dog. This little fluffy bundle of beauty, brains and loyalty is perfect for first time dog-owners or active families looking to add a new member. PEMBROKE WELSH CORGI

Weight:  20-30 lbs

Energy level: 4

Exercise Needs: 4

Lifespan: 12-14

Does well in an apartment:  4

Shedding: 5

Intelligence: 5

Kid Friendly: 4

Dog Friendly: 3

Tolerates being alone: 2.5

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: Despite the internet depicting them as couch potatoes, this comical little dog is full of energy and always up for an adventure. Friendly and good with kids, the Corgi makes a nice family dog. However, due to his background as a herding breed, be aware that your Corgi may nip at the heels of small children and toddlers to “herd” them. It is nearly impossible to train this innate tendency out of them, so the Corgi is definitely more suited for a family with elementary-school aged kids. This is also a little dog that loves to talk, so be prepared for some barking.

The Corgi is an intelligent breed that is generally easy to train, although they can definitely have a stubborn streak. Just because they can understand what you want, doesn’t mean they will listen. Obedience classes are a great idea, as is the use of food as a reward for good behavior, since this breed is very food-motivated. Keep in mind that, due to their love of a good snack, the Corgi can easily become overweight, so make sure they get lots of exercise. The Corgi is a smart little dog who will also need plenty of mental stimulation, in the form of lots of toys, bones and socialization. This is the perfect dog for an active family that loves to take long walks/go hiking etc. and has experience with dogs. If you are looking for a confident, independent, cheerful little dog that can always make you laugh, the Corgi may be the perfect breed for you.

FRENCH BULLDOG

Does well in an Apartment:  3

Shedding:  hypoallergenic

Intelligence:  4

Kid Friendly:  3

Dog Friendly:  3

Tolerates being alone:  2

Ease of Training: 3

Suitable for: Frenchies are adorable in their own perfect, unique way. Small and compact, these lively little dogs make wonderful companions and are never as happy as when they are being lavished with love. These pups enjoy playing all kinds of games and love “educational” doggie toys, but also adore a nice nap and generally maintain a very relaxed attitude. Training will be easiest if you incorporate short, upbeat training sessions that feel like a game. Frenchies like being around other pets but can grow up to be testy with adult dogs, so—like any breed—it is important to incorporate lots of early socialization with people, places and other animals. This pup is a small enough dog to go most places with you, so socializing them well is a lot of fun! The Frenchie needs to be kept in a cool, comfortable environment and not allowed to overheat. While normally two fifteen-minute walks a day are perfect for keeping him in shape, at the height of the summer, it’s best to keep walks a bit shorter than normaland either take them in early morning or later evening, when the sun is not at its hottest. The Frenchie is an inquisitive, mischievous little dog who will keep you laughing at his antics when he’s not happily snoring at your side. Perfect for families, novice owners and everyone else, this little bulldog is always an excellent choice!

Ease of Training: 3.5

Suitable for: The eminently lovable ShihTzu is pretty much the perfect dog for anyone, whether a novice owner, a city-dweller or a family. This little floofball adores people and was bred to be your best friend. Although they are good with kids and other pets, like any small breed, Shih-Tzu’s must be watched closely with when playing with small children or large-breed dogs, less they accidentally get hurt. As they are small enough to be easily injured, they do better in a house with elementary-school aged kids.

They also should be well socialized during their puppyhood to a variety of people, places and other animals—luckily this is easy, as they are small enough to bring most places with you! They are cheerful little pups who will get along well with other family pets. As they are hypoallergenic, they do not shed, but will need to be groomed every six-eight weeks and brushed daily. If you are looking for a happy, hugely affectionate little housedog who will faithfully dog your footsteps from room to room, look no further than the precious ShihTzu.

Lovable, huggable and small enough to be portable, the Teddy Bear is eminently adaptable. Their cheerful personalities and gentle ways also make them an excellent choice as a therapy dog or emotional support dog. This baby will need regular brushing and trips to the groomer, but is adorable whether you keep his fur short or long. The Teddy Bear is a people dog through and through and cannot be left alone for long periods of time without becoming depressed and developing separation anxiety. The good news is, your Teddy is small enough to go almost everywhere with you! Keep in mind that, despite their small size, these little pups have a good amount of energy. A twenty minute walk a day and some good play sessions, along with lots of toys and bones will keep your doggie happy and well-adjusted. Teddy Bears love children and other animals but, like any small dog, must be closely supervised around young children or large breed dogs, in order to prevent your puppy from being injured. LHASA APSO

Does well in an Apartment:  3

Shedding:  hypoallergenic

Intelligence:  4

Kid Friendly:  3

Ease of Training: 3

The Lhasa Apso was originally bred to be a palace guard dog and he takes his duties very seriously—both with his obvious pride in his royal lineage and in a strong protectiveness towards his family.  If you are comfortable with a little watchdog who will alert you to any danger, (even if the “danger” is your Amazon Delivery) the Lhasa is a great choice. However, if you live in somewhere barking might disturb your neighbors, this might not be the breed for you.  Don’t get me wrong--Lhasa’s can be bred to bark less, but you will never succeed in fully training them out of the need to bark. But, again, with the bark comes a fierce loyalty and desire to protect their family. This devoted little pup does require a lot of socializing, to combat their natural wariness. However, as they are small and hypoallergenic, they are easy to bring everywhere with you!

These smart little dogs have an independent streak and will respond best to a firm but gentle hand, consistent training and an owner who will love them and spend lots of time with them without babying them. These are intelligent, self-possessed pups who are happy to do their own thing while still being devoted to their owners. Although lively and playful throughout their puppyhood (which generally lasts till around the age of three) overall, this pups exercise needs are moderate. They are quite happy to sit on the couch with you and will be fine with a couple short walks a day and some toys of their own. They do great with children who are a little older and out of their clumsy “step-on-the-dog” phase. So, basically, elementary-school aged kids who have been taught how to behave with dogs.  If you are looking for a super smart, long-lived, hardy little dog to be your most loyal companion, look no further than the Lhasa Apso!

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for:  The Mini Aussie is a small to mid-sized dog with a lot of energy who will need daily walks and a good amount of mental stimulation to grow into a happy, well-adjusted dog. Plan on an hour or two a day devoted to walks and play sessions with your puppy.  This breed is highly intelligent and genuinely enjoys learning new things. They will do exceptionally well in obedience classes or in agility training.  Like any puppy, the Mini-Aussie should be socialized to new people, places and things at a young age. They love children and other pets and will thrive when they are allowed to be important members of the family, who are left alone as infrequently as possible. As the Mini Aussie can be quite small during puppyhood, they are generally recommended for someone with elementary-school aged children. However, as long as your toddler/preschooler is well-supervised and gentle with the puppy, the Mini Aussie does eventually get large enough to be a bit sturdier, so it all works out. Cheerful, extremely devoted, eager to please and highly lovable, the Miniature Australian Shepherd is an excellent dog for an active owner or family.

It’s always a good idea to take your pup to obedience training--you will be surprised to see how much they enjoy learning new tricks. Your Pom will also make an excellent watch dog, once they’ve been trained to stop barking on command.  These little dogs are truly lovable and are happiest when surrounded by all their people. They will normally pick one family member as “theirs” but they will play with everyone. MINI POODLE

Lifespan: 12-15

Does well in an Apartment: 5

Shedding: hypoallergenic/non-shedding

Intelligence: 5

Kid Friendly: 5

Dog Friendly:4

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: Poodles are highly intelligent dogs, eminently trainable and great at almost whatever task you can give them. It is important that you give them jobs, as they are so smart that they can become bored and destructive if they don’t receive enough mental/physical stimulation. This goes for the little poodles as well as the standard. Also, don’t make the mistake of babying your toy poodle. If you coddle him too much, he will get the idea that he is the leader of the family. Training your dog and teaching him good doggie manners shows him that you are in charge, and allows him to be happy and relaxed.

Because of their inquisitive nature and love of learning, obedience training is an excellent idea for your poodle. Again, this is a smart, curious breed that does not do well with boredom or too much time spent alone. If your poodle is left alone for hours a day, he will become destructive and neurotic. This is a dog that needs to be part of the family! Poodles are great with kids—although, as with any very small breed puppy, they are not recommended for people with babies/toddlers. They will do fine with preschool aged children, as long as they child is supervised and has been taught how to behave around dogs. They also get along well with other pets, especially when introduced in puppyhood. Like any breed, they should be well-socialized to a variety of people, places and other animals to ensure they are happy and well-adjusted. The poodle is great for a novice dog owner, a familyor pretty much anyone who is looking for a highly intelligent, energetic, loyal pup who would follow them to the ends of the earth!

Although they are even-tempered, happy dogs, if they are not given a regular outlet for their boisterous energy, the Golden will develop behavioral issues. However, when given plenty of attention and exercise, the immensely adorable Golden Retriever is the quintessential family dog, who loves kids, other pets and strangers will equal fervor. This pup’s glorious golden fur is his crowning glory, but this breed must be brushed daily and groomed on a regular basis to keep their fur from matting. YORKSHIRE TERRIER

Weight:  5-11

Energy level: 5

Exercise Needs: 3

Lifespan: 12-15

Does well in an Apartment: 5

Shedding: hypoallergenic/non-shedding

Intelligence: 3.5

Kid Friendly: 3 (not recommended for families with toddlers/preschoolers)

Dog Friendly: 3

Tolerates being alone: 2

Ease of Training: 3.5

Suitable for:  The Yorkie is the definition of a big dog in a little dog body—spunky and fearless, this pup is always up for a good time or a grand adventure. These little dogs do great in apartments, but are definitely yappy, so you will have to train them to know when and when not to bark. Because of their size and temperment, Yorkies are definitely recommended for families with older children who have been taught how to treat dogs—this is not a breed that will tolerate a lot of poking and prodding from small children. These pups are energetic and love to take walks and have play sessions, but are small enough that their exercise needs can be easily met with a ten to fifteen minute walk a day and some inside playtime. The Yorkie is the quintessential “Velcro” dog. However, because they are affectionate and tiny and adorable, people have a tendency to baby this breed and treat them as if are helpless. This is a bad idea, as it will cause your Yorkie to become fearful and neurotic. Keep in mind that these dogs were initially bred to hunt rats and are just as capable as a bigger dog.  On the flip side of that, because of their fearlessness, it’s always a good idea to make sure that your Yorkie is leashed and supervised around other dogs, as they will have no problem starting trouble with a dog that is big enough to swallow them.

You also want to remember that they were bred as prey animals and should never be left unsupervised around things like hamsters or guinea pigs. They are also apt to take off in hot pursuit if they spot a squirrel so, again, keep them leashed. Despite their love of adventure, the Yorkie is, at heart, a super sweet, lovable dog who will adore his people above all else and will need plenty of lap-time and snuggles. So, if you are looking for a small, devoted, beautiful dog with a great big personality, stop by today and fall in love with our Yorkie!

ENGLISH BULLDOG

Weight:  40-50 lbs

Energy level: 2

Exercise Needs: 3

Lifespan: 8-12

Does well in an Apartment: 5

Shedding: 3

Intelligence: 2.5

Kid Friendly: 4

Dog Friendly: 2 (unless raised together—does better with the opposite sex)

Tolerates being alone: 2.5

Ease of Training: 3

Suitable for: Who doesn’t love these smushy-faced couch potatoes? The English Bulldog wants nothing more than to hang out in bed with you, or on your couch (he’s not picky) preferably with a comfy blanket and some tasty snacks. Despite this, keep in mind that it is important to take your bulldog for a walk every day to keep his joints limber and to keep him from getting overweight. However, also be aware that these dogs have a tendency to easily overheat and are prone to heatstroke, so if it is too warm outside, walking your dog later in the evening or early in the morning is a good idea. The bulldog is also sensitive to cold weather, so should not be outdoors too long in the fall/winter months. All in all, even though his bulk makes him look big and tough, the bulldog is a homebody who should never be kept outside for long lengths of time.

Like all dogs, the Bulldog needs lots of early socialization, includingobedience classes and trips to the dog-park to ensure he grows up happy and well-adjusted. Their amiable, laid-back temperament makes the bulldog a great family dog that will get along great with children and other pets. If you are looking for a lovable, super-sweet, easy-going pal that will be admired wherever he goes, the Bulldog may be your breed!
